Oppo, I have returned from my great pilgrimage to one of our automotive meccas, Germany. I saw the Porsche Museum and visited the famed Nurburgring! I also ate a lot of food and drank many liters of beer! I will post pictures and details soon, but in the meantime, feel free to ask me anything.

You better not have done anything with Sabine. If you did...you and I are gonna have words, buddy.

Haha, no, sadly the lovely Miss Schmitz was not at the ‘ring when I was there.

Now Verena, the beer maid, on the other hand...

Everything.

I had flamkuchin, schnitzel and spatzle, an enormous pork knuckle, several fest chickens, steak served on a hot rock, bratwurst, currywurst, various types of bretzels (pretzels) including plain, butter, cheese, cheese and ham.

“Everything” is the correct description when talking about German cuisine. Large portions (well, to everyone not American) for little money. I’m in Bavaria this week, attending (among other things) Oktoberfest in Munich.

I brought back like 12 lbs of Ritter Sport chocolate. You’re more than welcome to some of it.

Honestly a lot of the portions were large, even to me, and I’m a (somewhat) fat American who loves to eat. What was interesting to me, though, is all the food is basically a huge main dish with little or no side dishes. My second night there I had an enormous schnitzel and spatzle. The schnitzel was bigger than any steak or other meat I’ve ever had, and the spetzle was like 2 spoonfuls. In America you’d get half as much meat, which would still be a lot, and then a mountain of spetzle (or potatoes, because we don’t have spetzle here, unfortunately) and a big helping of a vegetable or something, and a salad before the meal. So it would probably be just as much food, but the portions are spread around a bit differently.

I seriously don’t know how all the Germans are not 200+ kilos.

Also, enjoy Oktoberfest. I was at Cannstatter Volksfest on Friday, it’s the second largest fest behind Munich’s. It was awesome, I ate 1.5 fest chickens and drank about 4.5L of beer.

It’s especially bad in Bavaria/Bayern. You do get less meat and more vegetables further north. To me, as a tourist, it’s interesting. I wouldn’t want to eat like this all year though.

I visited the US earlier this year. I was primarily fascinated by 1. Drinks (xl, xxl and xxxxl were the only options) and 2. Diners. I felt my veins narrowing by merely looking at the food.

Yeah, it’s kind of fun to pig out from time to time, but I wouldn’t want to eat like that all year either.

And I think you’re right on both observations you made in the US. We love lots of beverages, especially sugary ones, and sodas. And fatty diner food is awesome, although it will take years off your life.

One thing I noticed in Germany that I was not prepared for is that it seemed like EVERYONE smokes. Here in the US smoking is way down, I think less than 8% of the population does it now, and and most of those are old smokers, very few young people pick up the habit anymore. But in Germany I saw young people, teens and twenties, smoking all over.
